Washer & Dryer Troubleshooting Guide
Washing Machine Problems
Won't Spin
- Unbalanced load: Redistribute clothes evenly
- Lid switch (top-load): Machine won't spin if the lid switch is broken
- Drive belt: Check if the belt is broken or slipped off the pulley
- Motor coupling: A broken coupling between motor and transmission (common in Whirlpool)
Leaking Water
- Check fill hoses for cracks or loose connections
- Inspect the door boot seal (front-load) for tears
- Clean the detergent dispenser — buildup causes overflow
- Don't use too much detergent (HE machines need HE detergent)
Bad Smell
Front-load washers are notorious for mold/mildew smell. Fix: Run an empty hot cycle with 2 cups of white vinegar monthly. Always leave the door open between loads.
Dryer Problems
Not Heating
- Lint trap: Clean it before every load
- Vent blockage: Disconnect and clean the entire vent run (fire hazard!)
- Thermal fuse: Test with multimeter — no continuity means it's blown ($5-15 part)
- Heating element: Test for continuity. If open, replace ($25-60)
- Gas valve coils (gas dryers): Intermittent heating = failing coils
Takes Forever to Dry
90% of the time this is a blocked vent. A full dryer vent line should push strong air out the exterior vent cap. If airflow is weak, clean the entire vent run. Dryer fires cause ~2,900 house fires per year in the US.
